An official picture of the Mini Roadster concept has been spied ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
The photo was taken from an official BMW poster used to promote the Mini brand as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. The Roadster is an open-top version of the Mini Coupe concept unveiled earlier this week.
The Roadster will be shown alongside the Coupe concept in Germany next month and both models are set to inspire production models in 2011. They are part of BMW's plans to extend and diversify the Mini brand and both models could inspire further variants.
The Roadster is expected to share its underpinnings with the Mini JCW and it will rival established roadsters such as the Audi TT and Mazda MX-5.
In reference to the chances of the Mini Coupe making production, Mini design director Gert Hildebrand said: "Hopefully we can get the okay before the end of the year. Everything you see is do-able for production — not cheap, but do-able.” The same is likely to apply to the Mini Roadster.

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept is designed and billed as the ultimate expression of BMW's emerging strategy. The Vision features seemingly every high-tech, lightweight, and aerodynamic trick the company has developed in an all-out effort to improve efficiency. And of course, BMW also says the Vision is designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. The end result is a lightweight, 2+2 coupe powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that BMW says develops a total output of 356 horsepower.
One look at the Vision and its clear BMW has created a vehicle that goes way beyond today's hybrid. Case it point, the exterior, which employs advanced layering technology to layer the various pieces of the Vision's bodywork over each other. The process smooths out joints and seams and help to reduce the number of overall components. The wild bits and pieces jutting off the car are all there for a reason. At the front, the A-pillars are designed to guide air around the greenhouse where a wrap-around spoiler, fin-like rear fenders and blade-like taillights all duct the airflow off the back of the car to in an effort to further minimize turbulence and drag. The aerodynamic tricks aren't limited to obvious body modifications, either. Underneath, the entire underbody of the car is smooth and flat to minimize drag. Up front, active louvers in the fascia close when the airflow to the radiator isn't needed, streamlining the front of the car. Below them, small ducts in the air dam direct air through special passageways and out into the front wheel wells, creating a high-velocity curtain of air over the front wheels that BMW says aids stability. The wheels themselves are also designed for aerodynamics with the profiles of the individual spokes designed to cut cleanly through the air and, again, minimize turbulence and drag. Despite their massive size, the wheels are wrapped in 195/55 narrow, low-profile tires to minimize rolling resistance. To keep the handling sporty, they're wrapped around 21-in. wheels that help give the tires a larger contact patch, one that is longer than it is wide for minimal wind resistance. All told, the Vision slips through the air with only a 0.22 coefficient of drag, significantly better than the 2010 Toyota Prius' 0.25. Thanks to: Motor Trend
These are the first pictures of the newcomer. Set to go on sale in 2010, the third generation of the family car will take the company’s brand values to the next level. It gets a dramatic new look that’s backed up by a range of hi-tech small- capacity turbocharged engines.
Ford gave the strongest hint of how its upcoming models will look when it revealed the Iosis Max at the Geneva Motor Show in March. And it’s from this car that the new Focus takes much of its styling inspiration. For more details click here.

When asked this week if the company is going to change the name of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, its best-selling car, U.S. CEO Stefan Jacoby said, "We are not that stupid." Any speculation that the so-called New Compact Sedan (NCS) will wear a different badge can end.
Our spy shots of the sixth-generation Jetta show a sexy roof line and simple, attractive flanks. What you can’t see are front- and rear-end styling, but expect a much crisper look than the current, bulbous Jetta. Allegedly, the new Jetta will retain VW driving characteristics. The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine will continue as the base engine for now, and the company's excellent 2.0-liter turbo-diesel will be on offer, too. The gasoline-fired turbo-four may continue in the Jetta, but it is an expensive engine for VW because it is imported from Europe. Looking forward, VW will bring production of smaller, forced-induction motors to North America as fuel-economy regulations get stricter.
The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta will be a little bit bigger than the current car to better compete with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Ergonomics will be cleaned up so that Japanese brand loyalists who jump ship to VW will be able to set a temperature, recline the seats, and tune in a radio station without having a nervous breakdown.

Mercedes has launched its first-ever production fuel-cell vehicle, the B-class F-cell.
The first 200 models will be produced later this year and will be delivered to customers who have leased it in the US and Europe in early 2010.
Mercedes claims its hydrogen-electric hybrid is comparable in performance to a 2.0-litre petrol car, but its zero-emission powertrain can manage the equivalent of 86.6mpg on the combined cycle.
The electric motor produces 134bhp and 214lb ft of torque. Its range is around 250 miles and it takes three minutes to refuel the car with hydrogen. By comparison, a 1.8-litre petrol B-class (no 2.0-litre petrol model is available) produces 114bhp and 114lb ft of torque in B180 BlueEfficiency SE guise.
The German firm has addressed one of the weaknesses in existing fuel-cell vehicles which is the ability to perform cold starts. The B-Class F-cell can start in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius - lthough its Honda FCX Clarity rival is able to start from minus 30 degrees Celsius.
A 35kw lithium-ion battery is used to store any power wasted under acceleration, recovers energy lost under braking and it provides back-up power to the electric motor.
Interior and boot space are both unaffected by the addition of the F-cell powertrain. The boot’s capacity of 416 litres is the same as a regular B-class and the drive components are stored in the floor. Safety is also unaffected, with the system undergoing 30 crash tests prior to production.
A Mercedes statement said: “2009 is the year in which we are establishing further milestones where sustainable mobility is concerned. The B-Class F-cell is taking on a pioneering role as the world’s first fuel cell powered automobile to be produced under series production conditions.”

Among cattle, myriad fried-food concoctions (including fried Coke), and plenty of truck-driving Texans at this year’s Texas State Fair will be the latest Toyota 4Runner. The Japanese automaker says the 2010 model will be introduced there on September 24, the day before the gates open to the public, and has released a teaser photo showing the new rig crawling on one very inclined rock. We can do one better: a crafty reader snapped these 4Runners with a cell-phone camera, giving us a sneak peek.
The saying goes that everything’s bigger in Texas, and Toyota tells us the new 4Runner will indeed be roomier inside. This is likely thanks to new squared-off, slab-sided, blunt-nose looks. As seen in these shots, the interior is nicely updated with a look similar to the Land Cruiser’s cabin.
We’re expecting a more rugged 4Runner with new off-road features to make its debut at the fair. As our last spied story explained, we already know—from leaked product info guides from yet another helpful reader—that the 2010 model will offer a choice of four- or six-cylinder power, instead of the six- and eight-pot configurations of the current truck. The four is a 161-hp 2.7-liter and the V-6 is the same 4.0-liter, although it’s been upgraded to put out 19 more hp, for a total of 258.
Options like a dynamic suspension system, crawl control, off-road ABS, and water-repellant seats should ready the 4Runner for off-road adventure. Luxury features will not all vanish, though, with keyless start, 20-inch wheels, nav with satellite traffic info, and Bluetooth and USB connectivity making the order sheet.

How a year can change things. In early 2008, Nissan and Chrysler were best buddies, announcing a trio of joint-venture projects for the near future. Fast forward to today. A joint statement has been written, with both companies agreeing to discontinue work on all three of them.
Two of the projects were almost destined to fail, after Fiat's purchase of Chrysler following the domestic automaker's bankruptcy proceedings. They involved Nissan providing Chrysler with small cars -- a compact Nissan Versa-based sedan for the South American market and a subcompact vehicle for global markets. Creating new small cars is what a majority of the Fiat-Chrysler deal is all about, leaving little room or reason for Nissan to provide small car tech anymore.
The third project is where the trouble lies. Chrysler was to provide large-vehicle tech to Nissan -- namely, for the Japanese automaker's full-size Titan pickup truck. With the current Titan slated to be discontinued in the near future, Chrysler's Dodge Ram pickup was to provide the underpinnings for the 2012 Titan, due out in 2011. Two days ago, we reported that Nissan was mulling backup options should Chrysler decide to pull out of the deal, and it now appears that Nissan's concerns weren't unfounded.
Unfortunately, the 2012 Nissan Titan has been under development for some time. With preliminary cab, interior, and body plans all based on utilizing the Dodge Ram's underpinnings, it's back to the drawing board -- rather literally -- for the new Titan. And that's assuming that a new partner can be found for the deal. If Nissan can't persuade another automaker to share its full-size platform soon, the Titan may have to settle for a refresh and solider on past its previous expiration date.
The agreement for Nissan affiliate JATCO to supply transmissions to Chrysler, as has been in place since 2004, will remain unaffected, the automakers said.

Mercedes-Benz no longer offers a six-cylinder engine on its flagship S-Class sedan in the U.S., but in Europe, the S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8 all offer diesel and gas six-cylinder engines.
Now we're hearing rumors Mercedes might be preparing an S250 CDI BlueEfficiency model or, in other words, the first-ever four-cylinder S-Class. Such a vehicle would debut at the fast-approaching Frankfurt Motor Show and have the Mercedes' 2.1L diesel engine used in the C- and E-Class models.
Along with the S400 Hybrid, which Mercedes claims will get 29 mpg combined with its 3.5L V-6 paired to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery, the S250 CDI BlueEfficiency could make the S-Class lineup one of the more fuel-efficient in the high-end sedan segment. Expect the S250 CDI BlueEfficiency to get at least 4 mpg more when tested by U.S. standards.'

For U.S. dealers, the announcement that the slow-selling Lincoln Mark LT pickup would be discontinued for 2009 was no big deal. However, the reaction was very different south of the border. For Lincoln dealers in Mexico, the Mark LT had represented 40 percent of sales. Thus, a historical decision: As of September, the 2010 Mark LT will be the first Lincoln model in history not available in the U.S.
Serious determination was needed for the truck to see the light of day, especially from Lincoln’s General Director in Mexico, Fernando Avila. Curiously enough, he tells us that convincing Mexican executives proved more challenging than convincing the suits in Dearborn, who embraced with unusual enthusiasm the task of developing a vehicle of which only 2000 would be built annually. Indeed, producing a 2010 Mark LT made several departments, such as the design team, reopen their file cabinets and pull out ideas they had set aside when Lincoln initially canceled the second generation of the luxury pickup.
Naturally, the 2010 LT is based on the Ford F-150, and in particular the top-level Platinum model, which essentially took the place of the Mark LT in the U.S. Imbuing the truck with Lincoln-ness required aesthetic changes as well as the addition of more upscale standard equipment. Among the former is Lincoln’s new split-waterfall grille, which became the brand’s hallmark beginning with the arrival of the MKS. Another design cue is found in the rear, with the tailgate carrying the broad metallic stripe as found on the F-150 Platinum, and the Mark LT also gets that truck’s retractable running boards. Chromed mirror caps, wheels, and trim add more flair, too.
Inside, the seats are swathed in brown leather exclusive to this vehicle, and the instrument cluster cowl is also lined with leather, with stitching that aims to give the vehicle a rustic look. Other items, such as the Sync infotainment system, also place this pickup above even the most highly equipped Ford trucks sold in Mexico (the F-150 Platinum is not sold there).

Chrysler is suing former parent company Daimler in a bid to force it to deliver parts for its cars.
In its court filings, made last week, Chrysler asked for the court to prohibit Daimler from suspending shipments of the engines, steering columns and torque converters.
It also asked the court to decide whether it must pay Daimler a higher price for the engines if it buys fewer than originally agreed.
The dispute stems from Chrysler reducing its order for parts at short notice - something Daimler feels it was not entitled to do unless a penalty fee was paid.
"Daimler's bad faith conduct and contractual breaches threaten to derail (Chrysler) and send devastating ripple effects through the automotive industry," Chrysler's court filing reads.
However, Chrysler has declined to say which cars would be affected by the non-delivery of parts.
A Daimler spokesman told AUtomotive News: "We believe these claims are without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously."
It is the second lawsuit Chrysler has issued against Daimler in recent weeks, with a previous filing claiming Daimler diverted assets worth around £5.5 billion from Chrysler just before selling 80.1 per cent of the company to Cerberus Capital Management in August 2007.
The filings also accused Daimler of selling Chrysler's World Headquarters and Tech Center for $325 million (£200m), less than prevailing market prices, two years ago.

Lamborghini is dropping the top on their awesome Reventon! According to our exclusive sources, the original car, which was limited to just 20 models, will lose its roof and go on sale for a cool 1.2 million Euros, or £1million when it hits our shores next year.
Production has already started on the roofless roadster, which will use the same engine from the Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, delivering 653Nm of torque, and 20bhp more than the original coupé.
Although top brass at Sant'Agata said it was "just speculation" earlier this year, a recent VIP event was held at their factory for a pre-release unveiling of the mid-engined V12 convertible, and parts for the car are even being built right here in the UK!
Auto Express can exclusively confirm that the car will be officially unveilled at Frankfurt next month, but if you want to get one, you'll need to be quick, as the 670bhp Italian supercar will be limited to a maximum of 10 models. For more details click here.
